Barabanki was lagging for behind in the field of higher education in the post independence India. In the year 1964, the then District Magistrate of Barabanki, Sri Luxmi Kant Nagar, I.A.S. was innovate and foresighted civil servant and derived a proposal to set up a degree college on 13 july, 1964 in the memory of Late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. No doubts, his endeavors proved with the showing and active participation of Late Sri. Mahant Jagannath Das Bux Singh (the then Chairman of District Board, Barabanki) and Late Sri. Babu Ram Singh ( the then Chairman of Nagar Palika, Barabanki) the joint efforts of the three gentleman made possible the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Degree College, Barabanki at the district headquarter. 
Several decades the said college happened to be only centre to impart education in the district at degree and post graduate level. The District Magistrate Barabanki happens to be the ex offices chairman of the governing body (i.e. managing committee) of the society which is responsible for running the institution. The patronage of District Administration has led to the admirable growth of number of students as well as new courses, At present the institution has affiliation with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University, Faizabad at degree and post graduate level as per following detail:

Beside District Magistrate as President of the Management Committee, the Principal of the college is also ex officers member of the said committee.
The institution is proud of its rich and well equipped library and laboratories besides will mentioned building. The institution has been the pioneer in the field of hearing and research in higher education and has mobilized generations for academic advancements. The institution has a glorious past. A national level award in National Social Services was awarded to institution in the year 1994 for its admirable and innovative activities for community linkage and adult education programmes by the Member of the government of India.
The students and faculty members have been continuously in spreading literacy among weaker reactions of the rural society of the district specially among girls.
